Studying the effects of practical procedures education in clinical skill center on medical students

Introduction. Education in Tabriz medical science university for medical students did not have a fixed and defendable route. Students learned most of the lessons theoretically which needed to be practiced and they were graduated from the university without having enough and correct information about them. It is noticeable that almost all of the practical procedures such as, intravenous injection, CPR, and endotracheal intubation were done by them. The aim of this study was to present a method of education which included practicing practical procedures correctly before doing them on the patients in a center called clinical skill lab. Methods. This study was performed on the basis of FOCUS PDCA in educational center of Tabriz medical science university . It consisted of 25 medical students who were selected randomly. With brain storming, attending of professors and medical students, flowcharting, affinity, inter relationship diagram, and with priority grading, it became clear that students should learn some of the practical procedures in an equipped center called clinical skill lab before doing them on the patients. So, evaluation of current learned procedures of three skills (Intravenous injection, CPR, endotracheal intubation) was performed using separate forms. The questionnaires were completed based on self assessment by the students before and after procedures’ teaching. In this study median, mean and standard deviation used to asses degree of improvement. Results. Results revealed that the median of CPR lesson reached from 1.6 to 3.85 and its mean changed from 1.550.85 to 3.570.50. It was 1.40 to 3.15 and 1.420.77 to 3.240.61 respectively, about endotracheal intubation . There was also significant change about intravenous injection lesson in which median improved from 1.6 to 3.50 and mean changed from 1.650.63 to 3.390.51. Conclusion. With the improvement of clinical skill centers and vigilance of the managers we hope that gradually, learning practical procedures is improved before students face patients. This kind of education certainly decreases students’ emotional stress, lessens physical trauma and improves self confidence of learners.
